🎨 From Local Talent to Your Tee – The Community Collection!
Say hello to the Community Collection—our exclusive merch line featuring the winning designs from The Spokesman-Review’s Design Contest! We invited everyone in our community—artists, doodlers, dreamers, and news lovers alike—to show off their creativity and hometown pride. This standout design, handpicked by our staff panel, celebrates the spirit of local journalism and the vibrant heart of the Inland Northwest.
đź“° Elizabeth Chambers & Alexandra Fil
This design was inspired by our work studying the health of Washington’s local news industry as graduate student researchers at Washington State University’s Murrow College. An essential quality of local journalism is that it is grounded in a sense of place, which we represent through the Sasquatch and his accouterments. The elegant serif font marries the traditional look of print newspapers with a modern sleekness, symbolizing a melding of the old with the new.
We acknowledge the use of generative AI in the creation of this design, technology that is exacerbating the decline of local news through copyright infringement, siphoning digital advertising revenue from local news sources through features like search engine summaries, and inflaming a preexisting conflagration of online misinformation.
Elizabeth Chambers is a former local journalist turned marketing and public relations writer, having sold out for better health insurance. Alexandra Fil is the author of the popular blog Happy Hagfish, a home for obscure science fiction, weird sea creatures, and food for thought.
